In celebration of World Prematurity Day 2024, GOLD Learning is excited to welcome Karen Lasby, RN, MN, CNeoN(C) for a free presentation live on Wednesday November 13th. Karen's presentation titled "From NICU to Home: Preparing Parents for the Journey Ahead" offers a wonderful opportunity to update your knowledge of the latest research on the transition from the NICU to home and current recommendations for best practice.

For over 27 years Karen Lasby led a specialized nursing team in post-discharge follow-up of extremely premature infants and their families. She has been the co-investigator in several research studies examining outcomes for very low birth weight infants and has published articles on many topics, including neonatal transition. Abstract:

As parents prepare to leave the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with their premature infant, they might feel like they are packing for an arduous and uncertain journey. Despite thorough NICU discharge preparation, parents often struggle when transitioning home from the NICU. This speaker will draw on over 25 years’ experience working with premature infants and their parents following NICU discharge to share common caregiving challenges post-discharge. NICU visit duration, independent care, and establishing community supports may bolster parent confidence and competence. Keeping the most common post-discharge challenges in mind may guide health care teams when helping parents “stuff their backpack” for their trip from NICU to home. An appreciation of these common occurrences will allow clinicians to focus discharge teaching. Following this presentation participants will appreciate NICU discharge preparedness from the parent’s perspective and identify strategies to smooth the transition from NICU to home.
