Abstract:

It is well documented that human milk is the gold standard for infant nutrition, yet practitioner bias, discriminatory medical practices, predatory formula marketing, and lack of access to qualified and affordable lactation support professionals continue to impact worldwide chest/breastfeeding initiation and duration rates, particularly in our most vulnerable populations. Providing equitable and unbiased lactation education and support, prenatally and during the critical first weeks of an infant’s life, can positively impact that child’s and parent’s long term physical, mental, and emotional health. In this presentation, we will discuss the factors, participants, and policies that influence a community's chest/breastfeeding initiation and duration rates and the investments that can be made to protect and promote chest/breastfeeding for all families.

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe how to support a lactating family's transition back to work.
2. Describe strategies to overcome challenges when returning to work.
3. List at least 3 mental stressors caused by mother/parent and baby separation.
