Abstract:

Many people providing clinical lactation care feel like they're taking a shot in the dark when it comes to supporting parents with increasing milk supply. With a thorough understanding of how the endocrine system works, peripheral to and overlapping lactation, true trouble shooting can be done. Learn about investigative lab work and targeted, individualized, approaches for low milk supply. This presentation offers a deeper, actionable understanding of endocrinology and lactation.

Learning Objectives:

1. Analyze the milk production cycle and process of the hormones of lactation
2. Describe how thyroid hormone is produced and how it overlaps with lactation
3. Explain pituitary function and factors that affect it
4. Name 2 lab tests which could be potentially useful for people with low milk supply to obtain and how they can be interpreted specific to lactation
