Abstract:

Are you hearing the buzz about myofunctional therapy and wonder what it is? This talk will explore and discuss the varied clinical presentations and compensations observed with tethered oral tissues in regards to infant oral functional anatomy and sucking. The IBCLC can develop comprehensive assessment strategies and begin to utilize myofunctional methods and lactation therapy techniques to optimize suck rehabilitation pre and post frenectomy.

Objective 1: Describe and define key aspects of myofunctional assessment as it relates to oral function and sucking pre and post frenectomy;

Objective 2: Discussion of checklists of normal and dysfunctional suck habits and related anatomy;

Objective 3: Details on which oral exercises to use for the lips, cheeks, tongue, jaw, palate;

Objective 4: Share what parents can do with massage and movement strategies to encourage better breastfeeding;
