Craniosacral Therapy as a Supportive Developmental Tool in the NICU
The NICU is the only place in the hospital where we, as practitioners, are responsible for brain development. Every touch, every sensation, every type of stimulation that the baby receives is a part of its neural wiring. Craniosacral therapy is the perfect modality to assist infants in this environment due to its light touch. It is noninvasive, as the baby can be treated in the isolette or during daily care. By finding restrictions in the fascia of the infant that may occur from positioning, medical procedures, general care and feeding, and freeing these restrictions the infant has the potential to release the effects of stress naturally and relieve undue pressure on the brain and spinal cord helping to regulate the babies autonomic nervous system. We will use case studies to discuss how Craniosacral Therapy can benefit infants with misshapen heads, feeding concerns and more.
